Establishing Shot/ Long Shot

An establishing shot is primarily used to establish an area/ location/ setting and a characters positioning or place within that setting. by presenting a whole setting the audience are invited into the drama and into the setting to escape every day life. The setting is key, as we the audience can then assume character lifestyle. Another element that is key within the frame is the use of lighting. the lighting is high-key, this is used to set the mood of the scene and to present it as happy and lighthearted. The overuse of high key lighting within the frame suggests a clear palette a neutral setting, which connotes a fresh and new beginning. The writers may of used this cleverly to establish new characters or a new plot, or just to assume a new cast or show, so that the audience are introduced to the characters on a clear, clean slate with neutral opinions, nothing revealed as of yet.
